 This is the old Tap Room, probably around 1950, with just a few tables in the room along the wall in front of the fireplace. In the 1960s, Lee Guercio Sr expanded the room by knocking down the bar wall, and doubling its size. Most of us 2nd generation Guercios, now in our 50s, remember our Mom crying when they took a sledgehammer to the wall.  Hal Burns at the piano in the old Tap Room in the 1960s. Hal was a legendary piano player and people drove miles to hear him. He could make a song out of anything, including phone numbers, and often did. Note the open candles on old wine bottles (Lancers or Mateus, anyone?)—something that's against the fire laws today! That's our dad, Lee Sr., in the background with the black glasses.  Here's an old black & white photo of the first Bull Run patio. It was on the east wall, facing Longley Road. This was before they widened both Longley Rd and Route 2A, and traffic wasn't quite so heavy.  Lee Guercio, Sr., gazing up at the Egopantis, circa 1955. Note the ever-present bow tie!  Diners circa 1950 in the Early American Room, long before the Sawtelle Supper Club was built. Those double doors in the background led to an outdoor porch that ran along the edge of the building's north side and led to the original patio.  Lee Sr with his first couple of cooks in the very old kitchen. This photo was likely taken in the 1940s and Lee had his signature bow tie! Many of us in the 2nd generation remember going to sleep on that red couch during business hours when no babysitters were available. |
