Rory Block has been heralded as being "a living landmark" (Berkeley Express) and "a national treasure" (Guitar Extra) and itıs no wonder. Over the years, Block as established herself as one of the premiere acoustic blues artists through her interpretation of and dedication to preserving the Delta blues tradition.
Aurora "Rory" Block was born in New Jersey, and later moved to New York with her family. Block was living in the right place at the right time. Her father owned a Greenwich Village sandal shop where musicians such as Bob Dylan, Maria Muldaur and John Sebastian would occasionally drop in. Block was exposed to some of the finest American roots music during the vibrant folk revival of the 60s. She played with some of the legendary bluesmen such as Mississippi John Hurt, the Reverend Gary Davis, Son House and Skip James.
Block began playing the guitar when she was ten and by the time she was in her early teens, she was accompanying her father to folk festivals and had made her debut recording with him on the Elektra String Band Project. When she was fifteen, Block left home with fellow musician Stefan Grossman to carve out a music career in California.
Since that time, except for a brief hiatus during the late seventies, Block has been honing her craft. Block has released over sixteen albums and her popularity has grown immensely over the years. She is now well known and respected throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. She plays her music with honesty and passion. Her dexterity on the guitar whether sheıs flat-picking or playing slide is astounding. She transcends being a mere interpreter of the blues and puts her body and soul into the music.
Block came to world attention during the 90s when she began bringing home numerous awards. She brought home W. C. Handy awards four years in a row two for Traditional Blues Female artist of the Year, and two for Best Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. She continues her award winning style with her release, "Last Fair Deal" (Telarc). Itıs a mix of eight original tunes and six covers of early blues and gospels. Itıs no surprise that Block was recently nominated for two more W. C. Handy awards Acoustic Artist of the Year and Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. She is one talented woman.
Opening for Rory Block will be Danielle Miraglia, a Boston native who "has captured eclectic audiences all over the map from music lovers in listening rooms to rowdy late night bar crowds."
