Bill Staines music is a true reflection of the meaning of folk -- music by the people, for the people. Singing mostly his own songs, Staines has become one of the most respected and long lasting of the folk troubadours on todayıs folk scene.
Staines, a New England native, became involved in the Boston/Cambridge folk scene back in the 60s singing in coffeehouses, festivals, concert halls, and for a time, emceeing the Sunday hootenanny at the legendary Club 47 in Cambridge. His music is legendary. The Boston Globe wrote, "There is no better writer of instantly memorable sing-along choruses in this genre of music" and the Hartford Courant, "Folk singer Bill Stainesı compositions recall the paintings of Grandma Moses simple, literal and evocative of a bucolic tranquility that modern time have almost erased."
Staines has traveled back and forth across North America (purportedly logging in over 65, 000 miles a year!) delighting audiences for over thirty years. His performances are witty and humorous and his songs are timeless. Songs such as "The Roseville Fair," "River," and "A Place in the Choir," feel familiar and homey the first time you hear them. There is little doubt youıll be singing them to yourself after youıve heard them once. And donıt be surprised if Staines breaks out into a yodel in 1975, he won the National Yodeling Championship at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas.
Staines has recorded more than twenty albums over the years, and other artists including Nanci Griffith, Jerry Jeff Walker, Pricilla Herdman and others have recorded a number of his songs. He has appeared on both radio and television including the popular "A Prairie Home Companion," "Mountain Stage," and the "Good Evening Show."
Staines soothing voice he will captivate and delight all. He has a knack for creating contemporary music that sounds like music of old. He paints portraits of simple folk from the men and women of the plains to the adventures of the Yukon. Staines is a true American troubadour.
