ASCAP Award-winner Laura Wetzler
performs Saturday, November 17,
at the Bull Run Restaurant
Shirley, MA, Nov. 8 - ASCAP Award-winning singer-songwriter Laura
Wetzler will perform her diverse blend of ethnic and folk music at the
historic Bull Run Restaurant, Route 2A, Shirley MA, on Saturday, November 17
at 8pm. Doors open at 6pm for dinner.
ASCAP Award-winning singer-songwriter Laura Wetzler performs critically
acclaimed contemporary folk originals, Jewish roots music in Hebrew, Yiddish
and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) and classic Americana. Her debut CD, Songwriter's Notebook
receives airplay on radio stations around the world and has
garnered great reviews for her impressive poetic gifts and her stunning
vocal talents.
The restless daughter of a truck driver and a choir director in Long Island,
Wetzler was destined to hit the road singing. As a kid, she wailed Beatles
and Motown tunes into a spoon mic, helped select material for her mom's
Sunday morning Jewish music folk show, and sang in her mom's choir. Wetzler
also counts Billie Holiday, the Childe Ballads, sacred chant, Odetta,
Sondheim, Carole King, Pete Seeger and Shawn Colvin among her eclectic
musical influences.
At age 15, Wetzler began performing traditional songs in Hebrew,
Judeo-Spanish and Yiddish from the Mideast, Europe, Africa, and the
Americas. After graduating from Hofstra University on a full vocal
scholarship, Laura worked in synagogues and performed folk-rock and blues
covers in New York.
"An amazingly gifted singer, songwriter, and ethnic folklorist" - David
Amram.
Combining her many musical interests, Wetzler honed her craft at hundreds of
different New York venues, and shared her music with civil rights and
anti-censorship causes. Her indie single, Jesse Helms Has Made A Radical Out
of Me, received nationwide airplay and was used on the sound track for
"State of the Art: Art of the State", an anti-censorship documentary which
aired on PBS and at the Whitney Museum.
Wetzler is a true road warrior who can belt out a song with the best singers
on the circuit. She performs everywhere from concert halls to arts
festivals, and has appeared on National TV and radio. She has shared the
stage with Richie Havens, The Klezmatics, Odetta, Disappear Fear, David
Amram, Vance Gilbert, Laurie Anderson, and many others.
