June 2003

Robin Lane and The Chartbusters to play at the Bull Run Restaurant on June 26, 2003, 8pm, in Shirley, Massachusetts.

Robin Lane and The Chartbusters became the epitomy of new wave roots when they hit the musical map. They had their start in the 70's of Cambridge, Mass, the hotbed of cultural and intellectual experimentation. It was in this environment that ex-Modern Lovers Asa Brebner and Leroy Radcliff infected, as they say, Lane's crafty songs and Los Angeles sensibilities, with Boston's dirty water. Hometown meets hometown. The cachet was caught by Warner Bros., and brought them the hit When Things Go Wrong.
In the early 70's Lane had begun informal collaborations with the band Crazy Horse and Danny Whitten, who Robin cites as the critical force in her development as an artist. This association led to her more formal debut, singing with Neil Young on his album Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Robin Lane and The Chartbusters rocketed across the country with a Warner Bros. ticket to stardom. Lane was compared to Debra Harry of Blondie and Chrissie Hynes of The Pretenders. The rhythm section comprised of drummer Tim Jackson and bassist Scott Baeranwald supplying the necessary poignant simplicity for the perfect rock band to be elevated into the halls of rock and roll legend. Except, real life became the priority for all members of the band, and in the early 80's after major label productions zapped the soul out of their music, they disbanded, but remained close and dear friends. Robin split her time between raising a daughter, honing her songwriting, and performing solo. She appeared at festivals in Holland, England and Germany, and opened for Warren Zevon, John Hiatt, Taj Mahal, Tim Finn, Dave Mason, Steve Earle and T-Bone Burnett. She accepted the Boston Music Award for Outstanding Female Vocalist in 1988.
In 1995 Robin released Cat Bird Seat on Ocean Records, her first album in a decade, and toured the East Coast for over a year. This CD showcased the charm, wit, energy and special gift for melody that have always marked Robin's work, the garnered rave reviews, including a featured article on the cover of Billboard Magazine. Last year The Chartbusters reunited and have just released a new album, Piece of Mind.
